How can a fairy'sblessing be such a curse? At her birth, Ella of Frell was the unfortunate recipient of a foolish fairy's gift--the "gift' of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day and a half, or chopping off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse--once and for all. In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as Catherine, Called Birdy and as richly poignant as Beauty, and has all the marks of a classic in the making. 00 Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award, 99-00 Black-Eyed Susan Award (Gr 6-9 Cat), 00 CA Young Reader Medal (Mid. "Love this Cinderella story! The movie is not even kind of like the book. I read it expecting the stuff from the movie but the entire storyline is different. The book is way better and doesn't have the shreklike mixing of modern day behavior in the old fashioned setting. This is very much just another version of cinderella with the curse added in and her relationship with the prince is so sweet and genuine. "

"This beautiful classic story made me fall in love with fairy tales all over again. A fresh take on a timeless classic, don't waste a moment of your life on the movie, but trust me the book is with every second. <3"

"The defiance that spunky Ella has despite a curse of obedience is great fun. It is more inspired by Cinderella than a true retelling, with fantastic twists and brilliant elements of originality. Ogre Enchanted is a delightful companion novel which I recommend if you like Ella Enchanted. "

"I don't even know what to say. This is such a delightful book, it truly is. I honestly fear I have become a broken record (or soon will have become one) when it comes to my rereads of Gail Carson Levine's magical work, as I feel that there is something to gain in each and every reading of this brilliant novel, no matter your age. <br/><br/>My own parents likely would have adored Lucinda's gift of obedience. That was one thing I could not stop thinking about the entire time I was rereading it. The father was awful - tantamount to an ogre himself, and I will forever be disappointed in how the film botched virtually every single thing about this brilliant and original piece of fiction and masterful storytelling. <br/><br/>Who knows, maybe someday we'll get a second attempt at an adaptation, but for now I'm content with pretending it has no connection to the book, because the book is too good for such a horrible film to be in connection with it. (No offense to the lovely Anne Hathaway and the talented Hugh Dancy, but truly this was just a perversion of spectacular fiction)<br/><br/>Anyway, this novel deserves every award known to the publishing world - including the Newberry that it was bestowed so early on. If I should be lucky enough to have children of my own someday (whether birthed or adopted) this shall be the first book I ever read aloud to them."

"I think that this book wasn’t a hit with me because<br/>One: its a middle grade<br/>Two: quest book<br/>Three: romance becomes more of the focus after a point. <br/><br/>This is a Cinderella retelling but if Cinderella had no obey her mother and stepsisters. The main character is Ella. She is cursed with obedience. If some tells her to do something she would have to do it. Giants, elves and ogres also exist in this world. There is a Disney adaptation of the book but it is very different. On thing is in the book Ella is strong, smart and sassy. She would think of different ways around her curse. She was my favorite part of the book. <br/><br/>A lot of other things I am very meh about. She goes on a quest to find the fairy (Lucinda) to ask her to undo her gift. By the way I don’t like Lucinda. I think that is the point. She gives gifts that end up being curses and she isn’t aware. Even when she gives up big magic she is annoying. <br/><br/>After a bit the book isn’t a quest and the romance plays more of the role. The romance needed more development and it wasn’t interesting. <br/><br/><br/>"
