A riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossible standards of beauty, after-hours room salons catering to wealthy men, ruthless social hierarchies, and K-pop mania “Powerful and provocative . . . a novel about female strength, spirit, resilience—and the solace that friendship can sometimes provide.”—The Washington PostONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, Esquire, Bustle, BBC, New York Post, InStyle Kyuri is an achingly beautiful woman with a hard-won job at a Seoul “room salon,” an exclusive underground bar where she entertains businessmen while they drink. Though she prides herself on her cold, clear-eyed approach to life, an impulsive mistake threatens her livelihood. Kyuri’s roommate, Miho, is a talented artist who grew up in an orphanage but won a scholarship to study art in New York. Returning to Korea after college, she finds herself in a precarious relationship with the heir to one of the country’s biggest conglomerates. Down the hall in their building lives Ara, a hairstylist whose two preoccupations sustain her: an obsession with a boy-band pop star, and a best friend who is saving up for the extreme plastic surgery that she hopes will change her life. And Wonna, one floor below, is a newlywed trying to have a baby that she and her husband have no idea how they can afford to raise in Korea’s brutal economy. Together, their stories tell a gripping tale at once unfamiliar and unmistakably universal, in which their tentative friendships may turn out to be the thing that ultimately saves them.

"DNF. I don't know if it was the pacing or the fact that I couldn't seem to bring myself to care about literally any of these women... But it was just so dry and so whiny I just couldn't. "

"The book was well written and it transported me to that period and I felt apart of their lives. I didn’t like the ending. Maybe their is another one after this that continued the story, I will have to check "

"Hard to get into but once I pushed through, I fell in love with the 4 women! This book effortlessly explains Korean culture and some of the harsh realities/expectations and experiences of women in Korea. I think this novel perfectly captured the notion that the grass is always greener- the relationships between the 4 women living in the same office-tel emphasizes how each of them is envious of something the other has. All 4 stories equally important to reiterating this notion."

"I liked the ending of this book, but overall it felt kind of unfocused. Very little actually happened, things that seemed important would be alluded to and then never brought up again, and one of the viewpoint characters felt unnecessary.

The writing was beautiful in many places and I think the author has some valuable things to say about female friendship and beauty culture in Korea, but I didn't enjoy the actual book as much as I could have."

"I loved Frances Cha's modern storytelling set in Seoul, South Korea (and sometimes New York) while so much of this book felt like a special glimpse into a world I never would have known otherwise it also had parts that resonated with me deeply. The female resilience, the generational trauma... exceedingly high and seemingly endless list of impossible beauty standards. This book was lovely and I enjoyed every second of it."

"This book follows multiple characters and their separate storylines which I found to be confusing. I kept reading only to see if things would eventually make sense, & eventually they did… but not enough to where I enjoyed the story or would read again. This book was recommended to me & I was disappointed. "
