"When your otherness is powerful, feared and possibly useful in saving the world, all kinds of epic adventures ensue. Essun is a good and imperfect person, and a great part of the story, the whole trilogy really, is how she attracts unlikely allies, unwittingly building strong relationships. Loved this series!"
"Like a lot of other fans I thought that The Fifth Season was the best. Still collectively this is a great series. But buy the midway point I lost a lot of momentum trying to finish it. Again Jemisin surprised me with her writing style. It's unlike anything I've read. Definitely want to look into more of her work. The way she put her own hurts and love into the story made it organic and relatable.

Motherhood was portrayed with that bitter sting of rejection and sacrifice. Also I shouldn't have to mentioned that the character was middle age and it was very refreshing. But this day and age there seems to be a post apocalyptic disease in fictional Characters where only 16 to 28's survived.

The complexity of the characters was also impressive. I would have never guessed where their arc was headed. Hoa was by far my favorite. Though I, for some reason, didn't care for his background story. Honestly felt like it was dragging down the book being thrown in at the last minute. Maybe if it was spread out in the middle book as well it wouldn't have been so burdensome.

Still present Hoa was intriguing. At first I thought his character was slacking, only to later find out all that he had been up to. And oh the ending. The build up was suspenseful but the ending didn't seem solid to me. Not earned as a friend had put it. Still with all my complaining I gave this whole series high stars. There just isn't anything else like them."

"I think I'll likely be wrestling with my feelings about this book for some time. Its an incredibly raw book, although I suppose the entire series has been. The emotions are so strong and the ending isn't as satisfying as I was hoping for....yet it is complete and finishes the story while still leaving room for the reader to imagine where some of the characters' stories will ultimately end. I certainly can say its one of the freshest fantasy novels I've read in years and I'm interested in trying out more of this author's work."
"This is the second book in the series, and yet still the main characters' perceptions of their world are consistently challenged. They are pushed to survive a ruthless environment while also trying to not entirely lose themselves in the process. Each protagonist finds new power within them that has been suppressed by centuries of systemic oppression, and so a lot of the change in them comes from learning to control that power. "
