Anne Bishop
Enter the world of the Others in the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s thrilling fantasy series: a place where unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—rule the Earth and prey on the human race.As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others. Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

"Not my favorite book. It felt too long with not enough substance. I think it could have been better had it been half the size. "

"A rather refreshing modern twist and mesh of all those Bump in the Night classic monster movies! I promise that it is NOT another stereotypical Raised Human But Secretly Not Human teen YA female protagonist deals - which is honestly what I was expecting when I found this as a cheap 99 cents deal on Kindle. I was very pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be wholly unique with just the right blend of creepy horror sofened juuust enough by literal puppy cuddles and a lot of Found Family. Also, the ponies always steal the show. ;)
Trigger warnings for past physical and sexual abuse and anxiety attacks, and there are a few bloody gory scenes in later books."

"Some of the best worldbuilding of any paranormal novel I’ve read recently— though content warning if self-harm is something you find difficult or triggering (it isn’t quite what happens in the story but it’s similar enough in language and description that I had some discomfort)."

"I’m surprised by all the glowing reviews! The beginning of this book was strong, but then the entire middle portion was devoted to learning the inner workings of their community and the main character endearing herself to her new neighbors. Apart from the occasional swear word, a few references to sex, and *slight spoiler* some people being ripped apart, it reads like long winded YA. Also, it was billed as paranormal romance, and the romance is more of a suggestion than fleshed out. I assume that will become a bigger storyline in the next books. If you want to immerse yourself in the world of vampires, werewolves, and many, many package deliveries, this is for you, otherwise steer clear."

"This book is truly exceptional, beautiful storytelling and world building. An intriguing story of a lost woman and a found home, in a world with no peace for her."

"Re-read. Didn't sleep too much (read throughout the night... Luckily I didn't have to work the day after...)"

"Reread: Listened to this on audiobook and it was just as great. My only complaint for the audiobook is the music at the beginning and end because, at least for me, it drowned out the words too much.

It seems like it has been a long time since I was able to enjoy a book like I enjoyed Written in Red. I was hooked by the premise and immediately got sucked deep into the story.

It was weird at first to have different days of the week and such, but after the first few chapters, it didn't feel so weird. What I liked about this was it is set up like high fantasy mixed with urban fantasy. I don't think I have ever encountered something like this before. Bishop never took it too far. She never, at any point, renamed everything in sight for her world. A car was just a car, a spoon just a spoon. Continent/country/city names were different, as it was pretty much another world, but was basic enough to not make it difficult to follow along.

Normally, I wouldn't like characters like Meg. The ones where they are weak and always need saving. The Meg was different. Because of the way she was raised, she had a lot of learning to do and I found it fascinating to watch her try to figure things out and for the people around her to try to figure her out. The more I learned about her the more I rooted for her to win. I'm firmly in Meg's corner. Plus, her and Sam are so cute together. Adventure buddies unite!

I think Anne Bishop did an amazing job showing that Simon was just not human. He has a human shape but he doesn't react how a human male would. He was often confused on the actions of humans, and in particular, Meg. Meg stumped the poor guy. In how to talk to her, in how to deal with her and how to get others to deal with her. I even giggled at his response when Meg was becoming beloved by those that rejected many of his kind.

I'm excited to start on the next one and have found a great new series to enjoy. Well worth the money to buy me a copy for my bookshelf too."

"This was a fantastic book that includes a bit of social commentary on the Native-American/European Wars. Only in this case the Native are "The Others" and the Europeans are all of humanity and the "Natives" won and the humans aren't that happy. Obviously not all the book is about, found myself laughing out loud and crying out at multiple times. Highly highly recommend"
