From the start, her life is marked by extraordinary events. The ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth. Told in the form of a letter to someone Violeta loves above all others, this is the story of a hundred-year life – of devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy. Bearing witness to a century of history, it is a life shaped by the fight for women's rights, the rise and fall of tyrants and, ultimately, not one but two pandemics.

"Born during the Spanish flu pandemic of the 1920s, Violeta tells the story of her life, while leading us through the history of her country (not mentioned by name but events in the story, such as the great earthquake of 1960, happened in Chile).

I love historical fiction and although this story took a while to pull me in, I ended up loving it. Through the lives of Violeta and her family, we learn of government oppression, corruption, American intervention, the slow progress of women’s rights, which seems to be a large part of Allende’s purpose with this novel. I’m not sure today’s youth truly grasp how women all over the world had little to no rights until late in the TWENTIETH century.

I think this is an important novel with a lot of good historical information. Give it a chance and I don’t think you be sorry."
"Her narratives are gripping and enlightening . A specific style which in all her books keeps the reader captivated with the story and the wonderful prose."
