"More family dysfunction and people being the worst than monsters and ghosts "

"Always been a fan of V.C. Andrews (not so much the ghost writer oof). She does a very good job of writing emotions of isolation and self-doubt, and the horror of your own family gaslighting and manipulating you, and it especially shows here. A well-written thriller 💕
(Spoiler warning in the TW:) Themes of SA for anyone who wants to read it, as tends to be common in many of this author's works, but it's especially prevalent in this book."

"Tawdry ****. Second time around and it was such a chore to get through near the middle. Bits and pieces remained over the years but on the whole, I remembered it differently. Then again I was in 7th grade the first time I read it! (Much too young.) I just finished it again and I realize now that I should never have categorized this book as a "5-star" read. 2 stars at best, and I hope to not repeat this reading experience again."

"I don’t feel as if figuring out the twist halfway through lessened my enjoyment of the book. I feel it captures the horror one can experience from one’s own family quite well. And one of only a few books I could reread and not be bored"
