Cassandra Clare
From #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand-new trilogy where evil hides in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any blade. Chain of Gold is a Shadowhunters novel.Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else. But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

"Okay, so that was eventful!!!

This was a character driven plot. If you don't like the characters, you won't like this.

This takes place between the Infernal Devices and the Mortal Instruments and heavily references many characters from all the Clare's books.

Lemme just say the story was pretty fluffy. It doesn't really seem present for most it. There was something but maybe it was just drama. This book is quite long since it drags on in some places and honestly could be split into two books. Regardless, this was kinda dark and hits on some heavy stuff. I also found it to be, as I usually do with Clare books, to be angsty. But that's fine... Totally....

The characters.. OMG. I'm going to talk about my favorites and my most hated since there are SO. MANY. CHARACTERS. (srsly tho)

Favorites
-Cordelia Carstairs. She's pretty epic. She's a new character, I think, but woah. She's not afraid of protecting those she cares about but also is compassionate and has a sense of humor. SLIGHT SPOILER [She seduces people in one scene and I'm just like "you go girl!!!"]
-James (Jamie) Herondale. He's stupid. He doesn't think sometimes but when he does OH BOY IT GETS GOOD. He basically is Will in a way, so fans of him might enjoy his son's adventures.
-Matthew Fairchild. I actually really like him. He's kind of the cliche "tortured soul" that Clare likes to add in for angst. But he's also a clothes enthusiast and much more complicated than most people think. I think he is my favorite!!

There were a BUNCH more epic people (Thomas, Jesse, Lucie) that I enjoyed getting to know. It really was a huge cast, though.

Hated
-Grace Lightwood. She makes me so angry!! Just bc she has power over stuff DOESNT MEAN YOU SHOULD USE IT. She's pretty selfish and manipulative. Honestly she's pretty bad BUT I understand why. I just don't like it.
-Tatiana Lightwood. She's just like her father.

Overall, the writing was pretty typical of Clare books. Flowery, full of commas and dialogue, and packed with information. There wasn't description of places tho (that I could find/find relevant) so I couldn't imagine the place. Just the people kinda floating around.

Historically (since this is late 1800-early 1900) this was... Something. Clare acknowledged some propriety rules and some customs of the time but dismisses them soooo fast. I just... Yeah... It's kinda bad since she could have used that to pull in more people. If you're looking for accurate historical details, you can get a few but not the rest which is so disappointing.

Another beef I have has to be the parts where she goes back in time to explain backstory. Honestly it was hard to read. I would be getting into the story and then WHAM we are in the past. Then I would get into THAT and get confused when we are in the 'present.' The POV switching, tho typical of Clare books, also added more confusion and tension than necessary.

The ending is killer. Just brutal. I have to wait a year for the next one?! Agh.... Well, I suppose I could finish her "Mortal Instruments" series in that time. I suggest reading BrooKe's review, too if you want more details on this!"
"For the first third of this book I was pretty indifferent towards the plot. It was entertaining but seemed forced. The second third I was convinced I didn't care about the rest of the series and would stop reading after the first book. Then the last third happened and now I'm invested, who will she choose? Will they be happy? Why did Jesse have to do that? Can my heart take anymore scares like Kit? Now I guess I have to finish the series, well done Clare, you sucked me in again. 6/10 for the slow start and the tropes, you know what you did."
"This is the second time I have read this book. I wanted to reread this book so I would be prepared for the sequel. I even took notes! This book made me extremely anxious and I even talked out loud to the characters making everyone think I'm crazy. I am nervous and excited to read the sequel. I hope there will not be a cliffhanger going into the third book."
"Hands down AMAZING. Perfect first book in this trilogy, and I loved seeing Will and Tessa as parents! This is one of the few sequel series where they don’t ruin the original characters, and make them terrible parents (*cough* Cursed Child) A must read if you like Cassandra Clare and the Infernal Devices!"
"I love this world. It doesn’t matter what time in history or present time they are set in. The choices are always so realistic "
