"I remember watching this the first time. Based on a true story of Rocky Dennis, it's sad but with great humor and compassion. Grief and life, the reality of it, love and loss are all shown without being preachy. A kid and his Mom making their way through life with tough obstacles is the core here. Cher and Eric Stoltz are incredible. "

Phenomenal 80s classic about a flawed but fierce mother and her extraordinary and indomitable son who does his best to live normally as possible with a rare genetic condition that imparts short life expectancy as well as unkind reactions by insensitive, or at minimum thoughtless humans (..being human ๐).
This film is moving and emotional yet layered and unsentimental. Eric Stoltz in an early role manages to be incandescent, capturing Rockyโs innocence, optimism and unlimited charm despite heavy layers of some of the best makeup artistry ever seen on film. Cher inhabits her role like a glove in a nuanced and powerful performance, melding effortlessly into Rusty Dennis, fiercely loving biker mama drug addict, as if Cher the icon never existed. Sheโs proved herself over and again as an innately skilled actor, yet still severely underrated despite two Oscar noms and a win. Wasnโt even in the running for this one! However she did receive the Cannes award for best actress (with the film an Oscar and Bafta for best makeup).
Despite its subject matter Bogdanovich skillfully directs with a subtle minimalist hand, keeping the focus on the grounded normalcy of a young man dealing with heavy issues and a complex home life. The script well written and focused, with moments of humor as Rocky elicits a nonchalant loyalty from school friends and authority figures as well as vehement protectiveness, not only from mama bear but the biker family to which they belong. And all of it to an audience that quickly comes to see him as just a kid with the same dreams and hopefulness as any other. Yes a tearjerker yet not with overwhelming trauma, and zero self pity and pandering. I have no doubt thereโs some sugarcoating here but does it matter? Its bittersweet message of true inner beauty and undaunted self acceptance is universal. โช๏ธ
