The Elephant Man

"It’s a little overly sentimental, and I was irritated by the horrible sound quality (I suppose it was meant to imitate the sound quality of 1930s films, but all the buzz and clatter just got on my nerves), it’s not a bad film. If they hadn’t had Treves questioning his morals I would have been extremely irritated with the inspiration ****, but there’s just enough nuance and stabbing self-reflection at an aggressively ableist society and the microaggressions committed by well-meaning individuals to make it work. Aesthetically, I appreciate the practical level of grime given to the underclass- oftentimes films really overdo it as if to highlight how much more hygienic we are now 🙄. I also think sometimes David Lynch’s directing style and abrupt editing choices gets in his own way as a storyteller, although I also appreciate his homage to Freaks (1932)."

"It’s been such a loooong time since I’ve seen this movie. But I remember leaving the theater feeling very distraught. I felt so bad for the main character. I was young, so I’m sure that played a part in that distraught. I think being in black and white helped with that too. There, of course, was a reason for filming it in black and white. Sad too. But I can’t remember if there was a good ending. Sorry. Probably shouldn’t write a review but it may be worth checking it out. Great performance by John Hurt, I remember that too. Love him. He was a great actor to me. RIP dear John. "

"Not quite what you would expect from a David Lynch film, but then again not knowing what to expect is kinda his thing. While it doesn’t live rent free in your head the way something like Mulholland Drive does, it is still a fantastic piece of filmmaking! Absolutely gorgeous to look a with a gut wrenching story and powerful performances. If you’re not a fan of Lynch’s usual style I cannot recommend this one enough, it’s just a fantastic piece of art"
