On the planet Ygam, the Draags, extremely technologically and spiritually advanced blue humanoids, consider the tiny Oms, human beings descendants of Terra's inhabitants, as ignorant animals. Those who live in slavery are treated as simple pets and used to entertain Draag children; those who live hidden in the hostile wilderness of the planet are periodically hunted and ruthlessly slaughtered as if they were vermin.

"This is a movie that is hard to explain or categorize. It is surreal, filled with colourful imagery, and little semi-nude people in a war with blue giants. Wow!!🤓"

"Yep, this was pretty bizarre all right, but I like things that are dIfFeReNt. Looks like someone's very dark nightmare going on here... Perhaps a tiny bit of Pink Floyd: The Wall" and maybe "Monty Python's Flying Circus" vibes? It's from 1973, so not exactly advanced animation, yet I enjoyed enough to watch to conclusion. I don't think this planet was all that fantastic though; I surely wouldn't want to live here!"

"Fantastic Planet (1973), directed by René Laloux, is a visually stunning and thought-provoking animated film that has captivated audiences for decades. Set in a surreal and imaginative world, the film explores themes of oppression, rebellion, and the quest for freedom.
One of the most striking aspects of Fantastic Planet is its unique animation style. The film's visuals are a blend of surrealism and psychedelic art, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that is both mesmerizing and unsettling. The imaginative landscapes and bizarre creatures add to the film's otherworldly charm.
The film's narrative is a powerful allegory for the struggles of oppressed peoples throughout history. It highlights the importance of individuality and the dangers of propaganda and dehumanization. The Draags' treatment of the Oms serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked power and the resilience of the human spirit.
While the film's psychedelic elements may feel dated to some modern viewers, its core message remains relevant and impactful. Fantastic Planet is a must-watch for fans of animation and science fiction, as well as those who appreciate thought-provoking cinema.
Fantastic Planet is a visually and thematically rich film that continues to resonate with audiences. Its unique animation style and powerful narrative make it a timeless classic that deserves a place in the pantheon of great animated films. If you're looking for a movie that challenges your perceptions and takes you on a journey to a fantastical world, Fantastic Planet is the perfect choice.

"A common theme of all these 1970s French animated films: surprisingly cohesive and dark stories, unintentionally hilarious animation, varying degrees of rushed endings. This one had serious planet of the ape vibes if the apes were 100-foot-tall blue Spock fans."

"(1) Kinda bored me (prolly bc I'm used to more fast passed dramatics and fight scenes) but I enjoyed it (2) slow paced, calming, weird, a few wtf moments (3) it's a pretty cool film "
