"A damn great Western. Can totally see how the Westerns that followed (especially UNFORGIVEN and even LOGAN to an extent (among those I’ve seen)) were clearly inspired by this. Fantastic cinematography (well-deserved Oscar win) and performances, especially by Alan Ladd, Jack Palance, Emile Meyer, and Van Heflin. I’m especially impressed by how Jack Palance and Alan Ladd in particular can use their mere presence (and the subtlest of facial expressions) to sketch their characters. Highly recommended."
