In the early years of the 20th century, Mohandas K. Gandhi, a British-trained lawyer, forsakes all worldly possessions to take up the cause of Indian independence. Faced with armed resistance from the British government, Gandhi adopts a policy of 'passive resistance', endeavouring to win freedom for his people without resorting to bloodshed.

"This is an incredible biopic of a great leader!"

"pretty sure the actor who plays Ghandi is a white man (or not Indian, anyway), so that's kinda icky."

"The very best. "

"This is a beloved film that lauched its star into such acclaim that he is now knighted. It depicts Gandi in a sympathetic light, without revealing his racist, sexist youth or other personal flaws. It makes for a great, distorted, view of history.
If you are not familiar with what I'm talking about here, look up reports by BBC, NPR and various university scholars, including Arundhati Roy. We are none of us perfect."

"I know this one's non-PC anymore because of the whitewashed casting choice of Sir Ben Kingsley and the sanitized version of history the movie presents, but this film is a classic for a reason and, for me anyway, it stands up to multiple repeat viewings."

"Long, long movie. But everyone should see it once."

"I saw it when I was a kid and liked it then. Now I've learned more about the man and his misogyny and "not awesomeness" but aside from that..."
