"A nice family film about a son who choose a different path from his father who explores beyond their city in the mountains, when a mystery about the crops comes into the picture the son takes a journey into a strange world unseen. Worth watching if you enjoy Journey to the Center of the Earth with a mix of family dynamic into the storyline!!!"
"First off it was really cool that the family accepted their son right away. The rest of it has to do with an old way some people viewed the world. If you watch it you’ll understand what I mean. I think it was a good one time watch, but not really much to it. If I was a child I would of loved it though I’m sure. It’s a great family film. So if you have kids give it a go :) "

jokes aside, strange world is a odd tribute to its pulpy 1930's adventure film origins. Up built a better pedestal to that particular genre (and the stumpy character designs of Up are more charming than the slightly-too-rubbery protagonists of Strange World imo), but that doesn't make Strange World necessarily bad. most of that genre is rooted in exploitation, colonialism, and heavily dusted in racism. and here's a movie that has a diverse (hooray!) cast where they learn NOT to exploit AND they confront toxic masculinity? its kind of amazing. and also it doesn't quite work.
because you can't tell me that a dad who ditches his family for 26 years out of pride is equivalent to a slightly self-centered dad who wants his son to have a stable childhood. are both flaws? yes. but not equal. by the end i hated jaeger clade. (its implied he seduced his ex-wife by endangering her first?? yo WTF??) i didnt much like searcher either, but i didn't despise him like jaeger.
i got excited towards the end because i could see this tough choice people were going to have to make looming, and i was extremely invested in HOW society would take it. surely restructuring your entire society that quickly would cause disruption, economically and in many other ways. they'd pop back to their valley, explain to everyone that they cant use pando anymore, farms collapse, machines industries crater, panic and riots. tough choices are interesting because of their consequences.
but they don't show us. so i was a bit disappointed.
ethan combines his grandfather's curiosity and his father's analysis and his mother's emotional intelligence into the best, most interesting character in the film. his mother is a close runner-up. but ethan aside, a lot of this movie feels like i've already seen it. The Balto ice cavern. The Croods life forms. Treasure Planet's morph blob. Up's crusty obsessed white man. Atlantis's quirky crew and expedition vibes.
i love the film's themes of sustainability and individualism. i just wish the movie had felt more like a self-sustained individual."
