Merlin Sheldrake
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “brilliant [and] entrancing” (The Guardian) journey into the hidden lives of fungi—the great connectors of the living world—and their astonishing and intimate roles in human life, with the power to heal our bodies, expand our minds, and help us address our most urgent environmental problems.“Grand and dizzying in how thoroughly it recalibrates our understanding of the natural world.”—Ed Yong, author of An Immense World ONE OF PEOPLE’S BEST BOOKS OF THE 2020S • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, BBC Science Focus, The Daily Mail, Geographical, The Times, The Telegraph, New Statesman, London Evening Standard, Science FridayWhen we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave. In the first edition of this mind-bending book, Sheldrake introduced us to this mysterious but massively diverse kingdom of life. This exquisitely designed volume, abridged from the original, features more than one hundred full-color images that bring the spectacular variety, strangeness, and beauty of fungi to life as never before.Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They are metabolic masters, earth makers, and key players in most of life’s processes. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and even help us remediate environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms—and our relationships with them—are changing our understanding of how life works.Winner of the Wainwright Prize, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the Guild of Food Writers Award • Shortlisted for the British Book Award • Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a fascinating read. The book is full of facts about fungi & mushrooms & includes interesting & beautiful images. I also enjoyed the author’s narration of this #audiobook because his voice is so soothing; I would listen to a little bit each night before bed (that’s how I “read” most of my books now) — And yep, as someone else on here mentioned, he’s “weird” (nerdy) — but hey, he’s a brilliant scientist, & he’s a pioneer in the field of mycology, a very new & “infant”science, so I got nothing but love for him 🙌🏽🤓 "
"More interesting and intriguing than I expected going into it. I feel like a learned quite a lot, and would, without hesitation, recommend it to anyone interested in the subject or science in general. I dont strongly fall into either category and believe most everyone else will know after one chapter whether the very strong writing is enough to spark an interest (it should! but we all have different taste)"
"At the core of all learning, we get a further glimpse of how everything is interconnected. Nature is the oldest, strongest subject demonstrating interconnection, and the professor emeritus of natures teachers would hands down be mycology! Merlin Sheldrake is quite the character, injecting his personal anecdotes and experiments among lots of science and facts, and invites us into this beautiful and enchanting world. A great way to approach the subject of mycology, to learn about its history and also about its potential uses "

"Even though it’s a tad repetitive, I found this more so a beautiful memoir about how wonder and imagination can lead to innovation and scientific discovery. After having a stem nerd roommate who HATED imagination and creativity, it was so refreshing to see that there are some scientists ready to fall into the what-ifs with wonder and merriment. I had a great time."
"“3/5”
Read this book for class, I found it hard to figure our exactly what sheldrake was trying to get me to think. However, I now appreciate the presence of fungal life and feel more well versed in the ways we interact with fungi daily.
Interesting read, would recommend to those looking for an opener when it comes with fungal life"
"Great science information that is fascinating "

"This is sort of a combination memoir/scientific review about fungi and the ways they relate to other organisms. I found it really interesting but it does ramble in places and a few of the people quoted are kind of questionable to me. Overall recommend it if you're interested in pop-science books though."
