Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans—though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the “Transition.” Now, eating human meat—“special meat”—is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing. Then one day he’s given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he’s aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost—and what might still be saved.

"This kind of dystopian story is fun to read because it’s thought-provoking in an obvious way. To be clear, the subject matter is NOT FUN and is disturbing. Trigger warnings abound. The author gradually primes you with one disturbing thing after the next until you get to the most horrific part of the book. If you can handle the first 50 pages, you should be able to get through the entire thing. My copy was only 209 pages and it reads quickly. Overall, I like the main character and what we discover about him in the end. I like the message it sends. I like that it makes me look inward at my own moral compass. "

"Disgusting and horrifying and yet, somehow totally believable. What a sick portrait of humanity. "

"I’d recommend with a lot of caution!! It should have been a quick read but I truly believe my sub conscience was trying to protect me from what I read. Written with such nonchalance it truly is a story unlike anything else. "

"definitely disturbing and a good example of what a hopeless society would look like. i did have to force myself to read though, and it only got interesting to me halfway through. luckily it’s not at all long, and it leaves you with a sense of slight dread."

"This book was so easy and so difficult to get through. It was incredibly engaging but the content was stomach curdling for me. The ending was not what I expected, but completely made sense and to say it had me in a state of shock would be an understatement. Would I recommend this? In the strictest of terms, no, but should people read this, absolutely. Glad I picked it up for “spooky season”. "

"Read this book a long time ago but it’s still one of my recommendations because of how real this concept could eventually become! The plot line is a little predictable but the story itself was chilling and kept me thinking about it long after I read it!"
