A New York Times bestseller! This sparkling edition includes a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series! Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other. She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting. He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be. Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity. Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be keenly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can to stay alive and out of trouble…easier said than done. When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is…completely Ordinary.

"OMG!!! If I could give this book more than five stars, I would! This book was beyond amazing! It's been a while since I've enjoyed a fantasy book so much! This book had me giggling and kicking my feet! Paedyn is incredible, and Kai is the ultimate book boyfriend! I mean, he is seriously top tier! The two of them are already such an amazing couple, and we didn't even get one single kiss?! The banter was amazing! The tension was impeccable! The plot was so much fun, and I can't wait to see where everything goes in the second book! The twist at the end was crazy! Enemies to lovers, forbidden romance, slow burn, knife to throat, who did this to you, tending to each other's wounds, nightmare trope, and dual POV! This book was everything I could have asked for and more! I'm sad I waited so long to finally pick it up, but happy that I won't have as long to wait for the next book! 10/10 would recommend!"
"3.5/5 ⭐️ this book just didn’t hit for me! There were moments I was really intrigued and into the world building but the story felt a little stagnant and I didn’t connect to the romance element. There were also a lot of parts of the story that reminded me of The Hunger Games. The story and world didn’t feel super creative to me. The trials were interesting but the time between felt like it dragged on. I felt zero romantic tension between Paeydn and Kai and it also felt like a really boring love triangle and times. "
"I wish I could give this book a 4.5
It was slow in the beginning but had me snared by the end. I can see where some people say it’s LIKE the Hunger Games but I cannot say it is the exact same plot. This book felt more intense and burned really good the whole way… the slow burn literally HURTS!! "
"Teenaged me would have loved this story. Adult me thinks it was decently entertaining, but very YA. I must admit it isn’t an overly unique story and feels similar to many other stories in this genre that have come before it. I liked it enough to start the next book in the series. Keep in mind that my 13 year old loved this one and I’m sure the teens in your life would as well! "
"OOOF the angst I am experiencing right now! a hunger games x red queen, romantasy, enemies to lovers AH! I loved the romantic tension - I honestly really get the hype for this book! I’m slightly furious that I have to wait for the next book because I just want a resolution between them (you know who haha) !!"
"With a divided “Ordinary” and “Elite” population similar to the Red Queens Silver and Red blooded citizens, blended with the disturbing high society also present in the Hunger Games, this book is both magical and suspenseful. Though I struggled to understand the concept of the Trials, and how they connected to the Purging that supposedly inspired them, I found the idea interesting, especially given the abilities of the Elite. Paedyn was a force of a main character, and I enjoyed witnessing the progression of her character and relationship to Kai. This wasn’t quite a five star read for me, as I wish there was more detail concerning the world building and history of the Ordinary and Elite. However the ending was satisfyingly shocking and I would absolutely read the next book. "
"*SPOILER WARNING* Going into this book I was expecting a LOT. Everyone was talking about how good the book was and that the back and forth comments were so ‘witty’ and they couldn’t get enough. Almost all the reviews I saw were 5 stars so I thought I would enjoy the book the same. I did not. Most of the time the comments and the arguments were not smart or clever. They gave me second hand embarrassment and I could barely read them. I couldn’t really get into the ‘enemies to lovers’. It just felt more like ‘rivals already in love’. The ending is what saved this for me. They are true enemies now. The reveal that Kia killed her father was super smart. Now Kia has a reason to hate her (all her lying and killing his father) and she has a reason to hate him! The book was really close to going into the 3 stars but it felt wrong to rate it so low. I did enjoy the read and I would recommend this book I was just hoping for to much. Also, (I don’t know how to smoothly add this to the review so pls deal with it being choppy) I’m going to list a bunch of books that remind me of this and explain why. •Young elites
•Red queen
•The selection
•The hunger games
For Young Elites it was the power or abilities. I feel that were attained or gained in the same way. Then for Red Queen I felt that the powers were similar but also the romance between the two brothers reminded me of Mare. Then for the Selection it was because of the balls and the interviews. Then finally The Hunger Games because of all the trials and deaths inside of them. I apologize if these connections are garbage but it’s just what I noticed and thought of while reading. "
