"Now, before you get upset by this being 4 stars, I'm going to tell you how to go into this movie and actually enjoy it. Because it's not bad when you have this mindset. The trick is to go into this movie expecting a tv show. The ones who made this and wrote this story did it for multiple episodes. This was supposed to be the first season of Moana, the show. Honestly, it would've been phenomenal. Sure, the music and everything is not the same quality as the first movie, but as a tv show continuation, it's great. But for some dumb reason, Disney made the creators change from TV show to a movie at the last possible moment. They basically said that the story was good enough to be a movie and made it work from there, despite development already being made for multiple episodes & longer than 90 minutes movie. Hence, we now have Moana 2 instead of the Disney plus original show. This meant they had to cut a majority of the storyline and plot that the tv show would've explored in more detail. If you are aware of this going into the movie, you're gonna have a great time.
The story is actually there still. It's just rushed. I still enjoyed seeing Moana grow & watch how her world expanded. It's not what the ending of the first hinted towards, but it is more realistic. The overall idea is there & it's good, the problem being they clearly made cuts to it in order to squeeze it down to 90 minutes.
Her song was How Far I'll Go, & now she's going Beyond.
The new characters are fun. Some are a bit stereotypical. But the villain is fun. Her song is the best as well. It's the one my theater actually seemed to enjoy the most. The old ones do return & we get to see them in a new light. I especially loved Maui & Moana expansion.
Now for the ending. This alone I'd say made the movie. It satisfied yet still kept you on the edge of your seat. It also allowed more to go down in the future. Since it was a tv show, clearly they planned for a 2nd season, which would've been so cool to watch."
