"+ Aside from the great performances by Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and (especially) Joe Pesci, this movie works most for me because of all of Director Martin Scorsese's crime epics this is not primarily about crime or organized crime. There are themes about greed and violence, but to me this movie is about the number one hitman: Time. The Irishman is more of a meditation on the ephemeral and impermanent nature of life and the way people live when trying to keep it together. The people trying to keep it together happen to be mobsters and criminals which I think adds to the tragic nature of the characters. It's equal parts enthralling and haunting. The story moves at a slow, deliberate pace and for a Scorsese movie is surprisingly underplayed. I was also taken by the fact that in this "De Niro/Pesci" crime trilogy so-to-speak, Pesci steals the movie again, not for playing the hot-headed Cagney character, but for playing the quiet low-key performance. When all is said and done I actually like this better than GoodFellas and Casino. For it being nearly 3½ hours long the movie never drags and never hurries along. It's a movie to absorb and savor. - The de-aging technology doesn't always hit the mark, especially with De Niro in the earlier scenes. I also wish that Scorsese would have given the women characters more to do in this movie. There's only so much male bravado you can feature. I'm not saying he should go the feminist route, but feature them as more than background figures who fill in space. It doesn't hurt the movie, but it deprives it of a dimension it could have benefited from. Overall: A sweeping epic that isn't about crime or the authenticity of the source material, but a meditation on the impermanence of Time. Great performances, though some de-aging effects distract at times. It could have also benefited by including more fleshed out female characters. Still one of Scorsese's best! Better than GoodFellas and Casino in my opinion."
