"I was really excited to read this book because it's by a Latina author and because it's written in verse. Here's how it actually went: About 10pgs in I was thinking wow this moves fast! That's great! And then I entered a sludge and it took me weeks to get through the next ~250 pages* which is really saying something considering how little text is on each page. Finally in the last ~100 pages* it picked back up for me and I was able to finish it off in a couple more sittings. For some reason when I finished the book I actually read the authors note, like the whole thing. Not to be disrespectful to authors but I usually only consider reading their note if it's a 5-star book and even then I rarely read the whole thing. But this time, I read it, and I wished it was placed at the beginning of the book! Anything that might be considered "spoiler" I'm pretty sure I read in the synopsis/blurb when I first heard about the book, and I know I would've appreciated the slow mid-plot more if I understood Elizabeth Acevedo's intention behind it as well as her connection to the story. So, I do recommend this book, but please do yourself a favor and read the authors note! Whether before, during or after reading the book, it's an important point of why this book was written and I think elevates the whole thing! 7/10👏🛬🪴
*The page count is based on the ebook, so print copies may be different. Also the audiobook is only ~6 hours if that helps gauge the length better."

"I loved that it was about genuine love between women. Sisterly, motherly, even to those they had just met. About a trauma that merges 2 lives in 2 different countries that were kept separate. "

"I was really iffy about it when I first started reading it, especially because of its format - but I really loved how the different perspectives were able to connect by the end. A very different book, so it’s not for everyone, but I personally enjoyed it."

"6/10 ⭐️ I didn’t think I would like the writing style and actually didn’t mind it too much but I felt like the book was either too slow or too fast. It had a good plot though and for the most part it was good writing "

"It was ok I usually wouldn’t read a book like this I don’t regret it I think it was good but the ending was super sappy. As someone who doesn’t have a good relationship with their siblings I was a little jealous of how quickly they were ok with each other so I was a little salty at the end but over all was a good book. Had to read it for a class "

"This was a beautiful story. It deals with loss, growing up, family and grief. After the dad dies in a plane crash two girl find out that their dad had a secret family. The dad married two girls in separate areas and had a daughter with both of them. The daughters didn’t know about eachother.

The story was beautiful but at times it felt slow. I wish we got to see more of the sisters interacting or even knowing about eachother. One of the sisters knew but the other didn’t know until a lot latter in the book. The beginning was repetitive of them dealing with grief. Not that was a bad thing. I would just like it to be a little bit more about sister hood. This book had a lot of potential.

The writing is still beautiful. After a while it is easy to forget that the book is written in verse. I also like that the book was inspired by actual evens. A plane crashed. Most of the passengers were from the Dominican Republic. Most of the passengers died and some of the passengers had multiple families."
