Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together.Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has a magical gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.

"The love triangle turned into a love/hate square….it all got really tiring and repetitive for me. The first book was better. I couldn’t buy into this one. I even got annoyed throughout and stopped reading, but forced myself to keep going. I will not be be continuing to the third book. "
"Wow. The ending of this left me mad that I couldn't pick up the next one and continue on. I only have a few short months to wait, but still, it will seem like forever.

Things are even worse than we thought. I thought the death in the last book would rip me in two, but it looks like I have a lot more heartache in store. I do believe that Pauline and Gwyneth have their work cut out for them on the home front.

I'm not a big fan of love triangles. So if there was one thing that would hold me back in this story is that. But it looks as if Lia has made her choice, but we still have one book left to go. I feel for Kaden. A lot. No kid should go through what he did. I also thought he was a bit of a bastard for putting Lia in certain situations just so he could have her close. I'm definitely rooting for Rafe, but he has a long road in front of him too. The same news about Lia reached both kingdoms. He might have a battle to keep her as his future bride.

Love this series so much. I don't think there is a single emotion I haven't felt right along with the characters. They are so easy to connect to and the pages fly by as the story unfolds."
