"Wow, I did not expect that ending. I love the illustrations, they are beautiful! This was a good prequel to shadow and bone, especially to see it visually was great. That twist was shocking, I couldn't believe it. Such a good graphic novel, and now I'm off to watch season 2 of Shadow and Bone!"
"This was such a cool idea, and I’m glad that Leigh Bardugo got Dani Pendergast to do the artwork for it. I hadn’t heard of her before this, but her art was beautiful and kept me engrossed. And, naturally, I love the Darkling, so seeing a graphic novel all about him and his backstory was super cool. I would love to see more graphic novels about Grishaverse characters’ backstories! (Especially the Crows)"
"I read this for a class final project, and I'm so glad I chose this. I was originally going to use Maus, but I decided this would be a more comfortable read for me, and I still found so many parallels to the Jewish experience, both in the past and the present. Whether Leigh Bardugo did that on purpose as a Jewish woman, I don't know, but it gave me a decent chunk to think about and it was so brilliantly executed and beautifully drawn. I was captivated from the first to the last page, and I feel as though some of the decisions Aleksander makes later in his life make a lot more sense now - although that's the point of this graphic novel - isn't it?

Of course, it was highly predictable, but I wasn't expecting any plot twists to come about. I knew what I was getting into and I knew I was just there to enjoy the story, keeping in mind everything from after this novel in the chronological timeline. Honestly I cannot get over the brutality of this book, and the gorgeous illustrations by Dani Pendergast. This has reinforced my decision to buy everything Leigh Bardugo ever makes until the day I die. Time to tell my grandpa to read this one, since he's the one who convinced me to read Shadow and Bone and the rest of the Grishaverse books!"
"I found this by accident while on a trip; I knew what it was and was so excited! I bought it and went back to the hotel, I read it in less than 30 minutes but yearned for more. It is a graphic novel and beautifully illustrated. "

"Beautiful but the plot just didn't do it for me."

"I have always enjoyed villains more. A good story is very dependent on having a compelling antagonist. The Grishaverse trilogy worked because the Darkling was layered, and yes, towards the end, you hated him, but there was a part at the beginning of Shadow and Bone where he felt like someone who could easily sway you and bring you to his side. This was Leigh Bardugo's intent with the Darkling, and she delivered. This book is another layer to that character. It makes you understand him and see where his compulsion came from. It makes him more human and relatable. A delightful read. An excellent villain origin story!"
