NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A daring story of adventure, friendship, and love in the shadow of WWII” (Harper’s Bazaar) from the renowned author of Ape House and Water for Elephants “Gripping, compelling . . . Gruen’s characters are vividly drawn and her scenes are perfectly paced.”—The Boston Globe In January 1945, when Madeline Hyde and her husband, Ellis, are cut off financially by his father, a retired army colonel who is ashamed of his son’s inability to serve, Ellis decides that the only way to regain his father’s favor is to succeed where the Colonel very publicly failed—by hunting down the famous Loch Ness monster. Leaving her sheltered world behind, Maddie reluctantly follows Ellis and his best friend, Hank, to a remote village in the Scottish Highlands. Gradually, the friendships Maddie forms with the townspeople open her up to a larger world than she knew existed. Maddie begins to see that nothing is as it first appears, and as she embraces a fuller sense of who she might be, she becomes aware not only of darker forces around her but of life’s surprising possibilities.

"I really enjoyed this novel, it was interesting, with a little twist! I feel like it could have been a little deeper in descriptiveness allowing the reader to sink into the story a little more. But all in all this was a very enjoyable read!"

"Love love love this book. It’s a great story of figuring out who you really are when your thought you’ve already figured it out. Beautifully written. "

"A slow build up to an engrossing end. I enjoyed this story but upon reflection I think it’s got some serious stereotyping and believability issues near the end."

"Entertaining but a little too soap opera for me to really love."

"This book is a spectacular work of fiction. Sara Gruen creates a brilliant plot with various twists that are never given away too quickly. The description in the book is masterful, and the reader cannot help but grow fond of the characters. An unforgettable read."

"A good read! I liked Maddie even if she hung out with two of the most awful people. Her husband Ellis was a huge jerk and their friend Hank wasn't much better. The plot in a nutshell. They went to a party, made fools of themselves and Ellis+Maddie were sent packing. They decided to go to Loch Ness to find the infamous monster. While at the inn Maddie befriends Maggie, Anna and Angus, the owner. She also helps clean and bartend while Ellis and Hank spend days and weeks searching for information about Nessy or find the creature itself like Ellis's father once did. Ellis turns out to be a very bad man, Hank is an idiot but everything turns out right in the end for Maggie but the ending was almost a little too tidy but it was still a worthwhile read. Recommended!"
