From the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of the genre-breaking international TikTok sensation Butcher & Blackbird comes the second book in the Ruinous Love Trilogy―a hate-to-love dark romantic comedy packed with danger, chaos, and heat. Contract killer Lachlan Kane wants a quiet life working in his leather studio and forgetting all about his traumatic past. But when he botches a job for his boss’s biggest client, Lachlan knows he’ll never claw his way out of the underworld. At least, not until songbird Lark Montague offers him a deal: use his skills to hunt down a killer and she’ll find a way to secure his freedom. The catch? He has to marry her first. And they can’t stand each other. Indie singer-songwriter Lark is the sunshine and glitter that burns through every cloud and clings to every crevice that Lachlan Kane tries to hide inside. The surly older brother of her best friend’s soulmate, Lachlan thinks she’s just a privileged princess, but Lark has plenty of secrets hiding in the shadows of her bright light. With her formidable family in a tailspin and her best friend’s happiness on the line, she’s willing to make a vow to the man she’s determined to hate, no matter how tempting the broody assassin might be. As Lachlan and Lark navigate the dark world that binds them together, it becomes impossible to discern their fake marriage from a real one. But it’s not just familiar dangers that haunt them. There’s another phantom lurking on their doorstep. And this one has come for blood. "This sequel in the ruinous love trilogy was amazing! The way this author writes always has me flying through her books. Although this was much tamer compared to Butcher and Blackbird, I absolutely loved it! Dark humor and romance with a bit of "Dexter" thrown in. I also appreciate that each book's trigger warnings are at the beginning. 5 ✨ and more! ❤️❤️❤️"
"I had such high expectations for this book, and thankfully it did not let me down! This book was every bit as enjoyable as the first one was! It was dark, but not quite as dark as the previous book (Butcher and Blackbird) IMO, and it had plenty of humor to help balance it all out. The plot wasn't overly complicated, but it was fun and entertaining. The characters were complex and soooo lovable! I absolutely adored both Lark and Lachlan! They were so freaking cute together! Who knew serial killers could be so sweet?! Marriage of convenience, hate to love, grumpy x sunshine, he falls first, slow burn, serial killer FMC, contract killer MMC, touch him/her and die, tons of spice, and dual POV! 10/10 would recommend, but definitely check the trigger warnings! Can't wait for book three!"
"3.75/5⭐️ dual pov. The audio for this was so good!! I didn't listen to Butcher and Blackbird and now I think I have to go back and do a listen because the audiobook hype is real!! This book was fun! The beginning was great and the end picked back up but it is a slooow burn (not my favourite) and the middle not a lot seemed to happen! Lachlan is the sweetest!!! Like acts of service and thoughtful gestures galore! Overall I really like this world and have fun reading. This is a slow burn but there is some good spice when it finally comes in!! The toy scene!! IYKYK 2.5/5 spice "
"This was fun, and everything that I expected from Weaver a second time around. I did listen to this so the experience felt different. However, I enjoyed the dual narration, the characters were incredible. Loved the development they underwent as the plot thickened. Though the twist, felt lukewarm, in comparison. This is pretty light on the spice but the spice is spicy, you know? Ethel will forever be my MVP because 🍑 need love too. Eager for Fionn and Rose’s story!"
"If you were a fan of Butcher and Blackbird then I think you would also enjoy this sequel. In this book, we get the story of Lachlan and Lark, who we met in book 1. This story contains the ever popular enemies to lovers trope with a side helping of a fake marriage. The audio on these books continues to be top tier. Don’t forget to check the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. "
"Went into this thinking it was going to be another Butcher and Blackbird yet left utterly convinced someone else wrote it. I believe this suffered a lot from no-plot-itis. I mean Butcher and Blackbird had that whole game aspect that left you constantly entertained. Lachlan and Lark shared a fake marriage.... to keep Lachlan alive...... from pastry bakers???? I'm not going to pretend I understood this.
Still, in the beginning, I went with the flow. Why? Because the first book was such a crazy ride and I thought this would be just as fun. So it had promise. I mean a pedo killer who turns their victims into glittery works of art. Did someone read my dream diary? Also, Lachlan was a sulky leather worker. You can't make that sound un-hot. And lets not forget the storage closet scene.... 10 out of 10.
The killing point for me was Lark's pity party which took up most of the story. She conveniently got anxious whenever Lachlan was around to take care of her. She is so brave, perfect, and fierce. I'm convinced most of the words for this story were upselling her amazingness. Also, I didn't feel the connection between these two. They were both hot and both family/friends to the first couple. It was just convenient.
Even their interactions and feelings felt fabricated and unrealistic. The flirtation was most of the time eye-rolling and sadly even the **** wasn't worth the wait. "I chose love." Oh boy. Also, the author stated the obvious quite a bit so the story became repetitive. The ending was lackluster. I was very surprised about how much I disliked this. Honestly, if I hadn't read book one I would have dnf'd Leather and Lark altogether."
"I wanted to love this book like I loved the first one but it just fell short. It was good but felt forced."
