Despondent Hull I was excited to see this go up as a discussion—then a little put out, because I don't have a good answer. So, I put the question to my Mum and she didn't have an answer other than, "They don't" and we had a nice giggle about that. We really crave seeing people like us in all media; but, the popular representations of our people are either way off the mark or different enough to not be wholly familiar. We don't do ratchet, we've actively avoided the places where "we're supposed to be" and we're cool with that. We come from a long line of educators and the people who love them. We aren't Huxtables, but we've enjoyed Sweet Honey In The Rock for decades. We mourned the loss of consciousness rap while we bumped 2Pac. We don't eat watermelon in mixed company. Most of our adults are college educated, have traveled 500+ miles from home and don't trust southern hospitality. There aren't any portrayal of us or the black families we know. I suspect this is the reality for most of us in some capacity. We can't all be Olivia Cookie Huxtable Winfrey. What is closest to your experience? Do you think we need more Blackish-ish-ness or are you okay with whatever BET says we are? Do you think Beyonce should produce more movies and series or do you want to replace her with Ava Duvernay? What?

Within Sight I have as many mixed emotions as you did. And I loved thinking about it. I’m very Freddie Brooks from A Different World but I also identify with the bookish elements of Rory Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls. I have hints of Sinclair James from Living Single but my actual relationship is similar to the tv show Mike and Molly. So while there are characters I love in black shows, they aren’t always flashed out like in shoes with non-POCs. I’ve never fully seen “me” on the screen.

Despondent Hull I really dig that show; but, I'm 3rd generation Cali. So, it's not my life. I really wish we could have Black dramas where crime wasn't a central theme or defining element of the story.

DarkPoetess I think I'd say, "Dear white people" series with a side to the "Watchman" series.

Kendall Malone Fresh Prince of Bel Air & Blackish. Like Carlton B. & Andre Jr.; I was constantly on the receiving end of " -not being black enough."
