"As someone else has pointed out, "Freaks" is so incredibly exploitative of people with disabilities and genetic disorders. It's no suprise that they were isolated from everyone else on set, ie none of the other stars/crew would sit by the circus entertainers. Although it is worth noting that when Ernest Hemmingway would stop by (no idea why he was there, lol) he prefered the company of the "freaks", and always joined them for lunch. I couldn't blame him- everyone else affiliated with the film sounded like elitest, ableist clowns. 🤡 "
"I know it’s a classic and it’s critical of “human zoo” entertainment, but it also fully leans in to the exploitation. The ending is absolutely chilling and nauseating. It’s certainly not a movie that has dulled with age, but the fact that it does so on the backs of the “freaks” remains upsetting."
