"I wound up watching this movie because Cesar Mallon, the dog rescuer did an episode about the main character of this movie & teaching her dog to behave. You see, after the events of this movie her & her class go on to start a non-profit together dedicated to teaching teachers how to teach better. That's when Cesar showed up in dog rescue. Her students are still with her & help run the non-profit. They consider one another family & have reunions all the time. Since I saw this year's later aspect with Cesar, he mentioned there was a movie about them. I wanted to watch it. This is that movie, & it's great.
It's got all the stereotypes of a "based on a real story" overly done moment, drama galore, but also a true heart. So while it may not be perfect, seeing these people's real story play out is amazing. You also get hit with a ton of reality bricks throughout no matter who you are. I had no idea people don't know about the holocaust. & that's a big thing in this movie that really helps shape perspective. You see a world society typically turns its backs on, & that goes double for the school system. It makes you realize just how corrupt & corroded our education system can be, even if you thought it couldn't.
Its a classic underdog story, but instead of it being about a star basketball/football/etc. player being that one in a million to make it to the pros, its about a regular class of students & their true stories. The hardships they have to face, what their upbringing has done to both their psyche & their education, & how they overcome their own circumstances. Its just completely revealing & eye-opening in so many ways. The story itself is unique when it comes to true story adaptations, & it's approved by who it's about.
To top matters off, it gets a visit from a now dead but very infamous person. I won't spoil it, but even just seeing that person is worth the watch. It shines a light on so many things people don't want to talk about, making it all the more impactful."
"I loved this movie so much ! It was inspirational! Hilary Swank was fantastic in it . Some parts made me cry . Especially the diary entries. Now I want to read the book . "
