In director Baz Luhrmann's contemporary take on William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, the Montagues and Capulets have moved their ongoing feud to the sweltering suburb of Verona Beach, where Romeo and Juliet fall in love and secretly wed. Though the film is visually modern, the bard's dialogue remains.

"My very favorite version of this tragedy. I saw it in the theater with a friend. By the end we both were weeping. The music, the colors the setting.. The new movement of scene... All with the bard's words. I still listen to the soundtrack to this day. This is a favorite re-watch for me when I need something to draw me in. Baz Luhrmann is a favorite of mine and this is why. This Shakespeare nerd met the wild injection of music and madness and I loved it! "
"I remember seeing this in my sophomore year in high school and falling in love with it, I went out and immediately bought the dvd so I could rewatch it as much as I could. I love how they make Shakespeare understandable to a general audience while making it interesting to look at. I do think some of it is kinda odd and goofy but for me the weirdness makes it that much better. "
"3.5 stars for this modernization of a classic story. My number one r and j story is the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film. This is my second choice."
