“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life.” —People The #1 New York Times bestseller about the grumpy old man next door that’s an uplifting exploration of the unreliability of first impressions and a reminder that life is sweeter when it is shared with other people. Also a major film called A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks.Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. Fredrik Backman’s beloved first novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).

"This is a modern classic, a book that will be read for decades to come. It’s tragic, heartwarming, humorous, and gut wrenching. I loved every second of it and read it in the span of a weekend. You WILL become connected to Ove and the cast of characters from his past and present. I really liked the pacing of the book and the character development. Some parts made me mentally cry out in anguish at the unfairness of life, but others made me feel tranquil and content in the way that you feel when you know GOOD people are out there. Always willing to support each-other. Backman earned himself a fan. This one’s a keeper. 4/5 stars. "
"*Trigger warning suicide*
It was a bit different with all the mentioning about suicide but it's important to the plot. I love the character arc Ove has. He starts as a ridged person but softens. You'll be very annoyed with him in the beginning but it's worth it, trust me. I love that you see him call people by "lanky one" and "pregnant lady" but he starts calling them by their real names as he forms relationships with everyone. I'll definitely reread it. Also I'm annoyed that the movie renames Ove to Otto, it just seems odd, but I feel like Tom Hanks is a good actor to play him. I can't help but to imagine him with the cat."
"I started this a few years back and did not finish. Picked it up again this weekend and glad I did. What a heartwarming read, and is a great example of how one life affects so many, unintentionally, but changes oneself and all those surrounding. So sweet."
