"+ A dark family film that blurs the line between wholesome entertainment and scary nightmarish story. This is right up there with Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, The Neverending Story and Monster House in that it IS creepy, but in a way that feels adventurous. From start to finish it lures you in with great storytelling and keeps you hooked with (oddly) charming special effects, costumes, and makeup. Angelica Houston is so wonderful in this movie which elevates it. Also, you can see where the Harry Potter movies got a lot of their inspiration. - The performance by the main child actor (while his character is a human) is not very interesting or charismatic. When his character is transformed into a mouse the voice acting works better because of how the filmmakers make the story work with real life footage of mice and animatronics. Until then his character doesn't quite stand out in any real way. Note: Some may argue that some of the special effects are dated, but I would say that because of the story and the way it was shot that the "dated" effects still work in a charming sort of way. You really get the sense that everyone creating it, from the actors to the camera people and everyone in between had a blast. Is it dated? Perhaps, but it's the kind of dated feel that makes it stand out in a fun way. Kind of like the Evil Dead movies. Also, it isn't for very young children, so take that into consideration. Overall: Odd, creepy, and fun! Makes a good double feature with Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory!"

"Childhood classic and still a movie I love and I've shown my children. I looked at lady's shoes til I was older and laugh while I'm wearing my square toed boots while practicing my craft sometimes lol"

"As a kids' story, it's dated, but well done. The acting ages better than the practical effects. Still, I prefer this version to the CGI version that followed in the new century."
