The King's Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. "This was a fantastic historical drama and I can understand why is was so recognized by the Academy. It is extremely difficult to portray someone with a stammer convincingly without coming across as a caricature and Colin Firth did so flawlessly. His portrayal as King George VI was brutally honest. I could feel his frustration and anger with every syllable he struggled to get out. My heart broke for him, truly. Especially in the scene with Queen Elizabeth when he started to sob the words “I’m not a king! I’m a naval officer!” It was very well written. This movie humanized the monarchy of the United Kingdom in a way I’ve never seen before through its stunningly written dialogue, specifically in the scenes between Lionel and Bertie. I was horrified with his history with his family which caused the stammer. Above all, this film was incredibly well directed. I could feel the anxiety King George VI felt every time he had to make a speech and the pressure behind the penultimate King’s speech through the clever camera angles, montages and score choices. A truly great cinematic experience."
