"+ This is a seamless blend of plot and story. Whereas the plot is about the quantum leap in ape consciousness through a genetically enhanced virus, the story unfolds with in-depth, nuanced character development . The plot itself develops into a first-rate thriller, but the moments in between plot-points are what raises its quality. Watching Andy Serkis bring Caesar to life is a great joy to behold and makes me care about what is happening even when there is little reason to care. There are genuine insights into the pandemic of fear that has infected the human consciousness for centuries. To create a quality non-human character and show him wake up into a complex psychological-emotional understanding of his own nature is no easy feat, and RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES does it flawlessly. Andy Serkis would have raised the artistic credibility for any awards ceremony had he been nominated. His performance is touching, multilayered, physical artistry that is just as much an intimate dance as a straightforward performance.
- It does have its share of mediocre performances. I think James Franco is miscast, and his chemistry with Frieda Pinto is flat. Tom Felton's character is an American version of Malfoy from Harry Potter, which irks me. I also think that some of the special effects are shoddy, looking too computer-based and almost interfering with the suspension of disbelief. The fact that it doesn't ruin the movie speaks to how well the story is done and how great Andy Serkis is. I also wish this could have stayed out of the action-thriller territory and could have been a straightforward drama, but that's just me. The story is that well done.
NOTE: There are easter egg references to the original Charlton Heston movie that I think work as cool nods, but also add to the textural quality of the story. One of the few movies where it doesn't stick out, but shows how the world we see in the present day narrative could lead to the world in the original movie universe."
