"Wow, this film delivered gritty realism that gave me 'The Last of Us' vibes with its post-apocalyptic landscapes and intense survival elements. I honestly have no words except to say two things: I COMPLETELY AGREE with every single review here, from the 1-star to the 5-star reviews, and Jesse Plemons’ performance was absolutely terrifying—he made me jump out of my skin twice!!"
"This intense and thought provoking movie was a daring and ambitious undertaking, considering the volatile and divisive political climate of our country right now. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought to myself " This is a bad idea!" There are a lot of impressionable people in our country and the last thing they need is to be given bad ideas or motivation in the wrong direction. But hopefully this movie will have the opposite effect. The reasons for the Civil War being purposely omitted from the film, although annoying to some (myself included), is probably a good thing. The reasons why aren't important. The point is to show the atrocities of war. And this film is chock full of disturbing images shown through the snapshot style of the photographers' camera lens. I understand why most people are critiquing this movie poorly, for the lack of story, but I think it's for the best. I felt there was just the right amount of action in the film. The images are shocking and brutal, anymore would just be gratuitous. Although it wasn't what I expected, it held my attention the entire way through and was an interesting watch. 7.5/10"
"I was worried about watching this, afraid it was just gonna bum me out. And it did. But it’s a really good movie. The direction by the fantastic Alex Garland is out of this world good. I’ve read some praise this for not pointing fingers or picking sides but it’s not hard to figure out who’s who. Kirsten Dunst and a ragtag group of reporters are on a cross country race to interview the third term president before it’s too late. The cast is awesome. What this does well is show the horrors of what something like this would look like and serves as a warning for us to not let it get this far. I just hope it’s not ignored before it’s too late. "
"Oh MAN. UGH OKAY so in the previews they really made it seem like there was action….in the future, maybe don’t use your preview clips to trick the audience into thinking they are getting something they are for sure *not* going to get.
Then they offer no explanation as to why the war is happening, or how it’s happening. This was the opportunity for a narrative that they definitely didn’t capitalize on. You don’t have to be overtly political or polarizing, but it seemed as if your only view was capitalizing on political divisiveness while still remaining extremely vague and devoid of opinion, which lead to a very thin story.
For an action film, there’s *very* little action. Unfortunately when the action does happen, at best it’s boring and unimaginative. This “photography” throughline felt very forced, and not at all interesting.
All around terrible, none of the characters’ decisions made any kind of logical sense, especially if you’d like those decisions to assist in the development of said characters, or their backstory, or just in order to somewhat fuel their actions.
I’m guessing people love it bc it’s A24, and literally nothing more 👍 wtffffffff was this"
"What an utter disappointment. This movie is not about civil war, there’s no story, no explanation of sides or where the conflict started or how. We know the US is divided but where’s the plot? Absolutely zero action until the last half hour and that even was a load of crap. This is about journalism during war nothing else and perhaps that’s what they should have named it. Non stop snapping pictures took away the impact of the movie. Two stars for the rising young actress in the movie. "

"This is a really good movie. This serves as a powerful cautionary tale of sorts of a nation undergoing civil war, providing a hypothetical scenario of how such an event could play out. This refuses to be explicitly political in any way (even going so far as to avoid even mentioning the reason for such a war taking place). This is a respectable choice, even if I felt at least the motivation should’ve been mentioned in some way. Well executed action sequences, and phenomenally well paced.
Without question the best parts of this film are the soundtrack, sound design, screenplay and especially the acting. Cailee Spaeny in particular is extraordinary here, with her transformation from someone who had no idea what she was doing to one taking risks as a photojournalist being portrayed so believably. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson also stand out (there’s an unsettling and memorable cameo by Jesse Plemons also worth watching for). This is definitely a movie people need to check out."
