"5⭐️ OH MY goodness I don’t think I’ve ever fallen in love with a movie more 🥰🥰🥰 This little shell had me crying! AND laughing AND feeling all the tender and contemplative emotions in between. Just so many quiet little transcendent moments, almost a meditative quality at times, met with joy, love, loss, grief and fortitude. The way Marcel is protective of his grandmother, looking after her every need. It’s something every human needs to see just as a treatise on aging and empathy. Plus Jenny Slate’s voice acting is truly beyond measure. Every little sigh or inflection awash with subtlety and feeling. Yes I may be a sentimental fool and Marcel is merely an animated shell but I know this beautiful little film is one I will return to again and again whenever I’m feeling low or in need of comfort 🐚💙🐚💙🐚"
"I was really looking forward to seeing this one as soon as I heard about it. And especially after reading all the high praises in the reviews. I really wanted to love this movie, but I didn't. I didn't hate it, but the novelty of it wore off pretty quickly and the story was really boring. It's a shame because this really had the potential to be something great on the same level as Toy Story, but they dropped the ball and it turned into a snooze fest. Quirky and cute but that's not enough in my book. 5/10"
"A Blu-ray of this film needs to be put in the Museum of Internet History. Marcel is the "Charlie Bit My Finger" of stop motion documentaries. The same way Free Solo (2018) embodied the epicness of climbing culture for the general public to consume, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021) embodies the creative genius of all those participating in the rise of online video sharing and a new era of filmmaking and creativity.
The 90s and 2000s internet kids finally have their magnum opus. Whenever we hear the world Marcel, that adorable little shell pops out from deep inside our Hippocampus and floods our memories with all the joy and wholesomeness you can imagine.
Who would've thunk that a viral 4 minute YouTube video from 12 years ago (one of the first viral videos I remember seeing) would get turned into a feature length documentary!?? Not me.
On a technical level, making a fictional documentary about a family of shells (stop motion/animation) interacting with the director of the documentary (live action) is incredible. I kept saying to myself "How did they get that shot?"
ALSO I HAD NO IDEA THE "BIG NOSE" LADY FROM EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE WAS THE WRITER OF MARVEL THE SHELL!! Shoutout to Jenny Slate for co-creating this gem."
"getting to hear marcel say “guess why i smile a lot. because it’s worth it” in theaters made my heart explode. I LOVE THAT LITTLE GUY!!! i fell in love with marcel when my dear friend introduced me to him many years ago and it’s been such a comfort for me ever since. i’ve been anticipating this for a while and it blew me away with its heart and ability to make such a deep connection with the audience while also being lighthearted and hilarious. great work, ace & windy!"
