"Another incredible film from Hayao Miyazaki with stunning visuals full of vivid colors (every frame felt like a painting here, and it contained impressive flying sequences as well). This is an immersive and moving biopic of Jiro Horikoshi, who ended up designing the Mitsubishi Zero, a famous Japanese warplane, exploring both his personal and professional life (including an incredibly emotional love story). I was especially moved by how they impressively managed to convey Jiro’s deep love and passion for airplanes and aerospace engineering in general (a passion I also share) and how it drove his work. At the same time, it does not shy away from highlighting the destructive power of airplanes in times of war (the Zero was used as a bomber during World War II after all), and the dilemma the main character undergoes through as a result of this. This in many ways is the perfect companion piece to OPPENHEIMER, which also explores the unintended consequences of the protagonist fulfilling their dreams (in that case unleashing the power of the atom) and the guilt they feel over what it has caused since.
Truly phenomenal score, sound design (the earthquake sequence in particular stands out), and voice acting as well. In fact, I never once felt like I was watching an animated film at all, as it had the feel of a live action film. Very highly recommended."
