"A great theatrical adaptation of the stage musical, that is itself based off a book adapted from the Wizard of Oz. Flushing out the characters of Oz, while staying true to the original storyline of Wizard of Zo though with a twist unseen if you haven’t seen the full musical on stage!!! Worth watching as the ending completes the first half of the musical yet makes you wish Part to of Wicked wax out just a bit sooner!!"
"As someone who saw Wicked on Broadway, I felt the same way watching this film as I did when I saw the curtain rise that day, only elevated. This was the ultimate love letter to Broadway and the original production of Wicked. I wore a smile a mile wide the entire film. This movie was stunning perfection. I was a doubter for some of the castings originally, but there is not a single person I would recast, especially Ariana and Cynthia, who were both a revelation. They were born to play Glinda and Elphaba respectively. I’ve never broken out into happy tears multiple times watching a movie, but the two’s clear bond and sisterhood made me sob. I now understand why they were so touched in every interview. I was moved and I didn’t even live it. Jonathan Bailey was also a standout. The music was awe-inspiring. The production design was flawless. This is how you adapt a musical with love and care. Bravo Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Bravo John Chu. If there is justice in the world, you will reap your rewards at the Oscars. "
"Wicked is easily my favorite movie of 2024 so far. I loved every second of it, except for when it was over and we had to leave the theater. When the credits began to roll the entire audience (including myself) started to applaud and I haven't seen that happen in a very long time. Please, I need part two as soon as possible."
"Wicked: Part I, directed by Jon M. Chu, brings the beloved Broadway musical to the big screen, offering a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience. The film delves into the origins of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), exploring their complex friendship and the events that shape their destinies in the Land of Oz.
Erivo delivers a powerful performance as Elphaba, capturing the character's depth and vulnerability. Her rendition of "Defying Gravity" is particularly noteworthy, showcasing her exceptional vocal prowess. Grande shines as Glinda, infusing the role with charm and comedic timing, especially during the delightful "Popular" sequence. Their on-screen chemistry brings authenticity to the evolving relationship between the two witches.
Chu's direction ensures that the film retains the essence of the stage production while utilizing the cinematic medium to enhance the storytelling. The production design and costumes are lavish, immersing viewers in the fantastical world of Oz. However, some critics have noted that the film's nearly three-hour runtime feels elongated, with certain scenes appearing stretched to accommodate the two-part structure.
While Wicked: Part I excels in many areas, it occasionally struggles with pacing, and some viewers may find the decision to split the story into two parts leaves the first installment feeling incomplete. Nonetheless, the film sets a solid foundation for the concluding chapter, leaving audiences eager for the continuation of Elphaba and Glinda's journey.
Overall, Wicked: Part I is a commendable adaptation that honors its source material, bolstered by strong performances and impressive production values. Fans of the musical and newcomers alike will find much to appreciate in this cinematic retelling of the witches of Oz."
