"A fantastic read! This book keeps you on your toes and attempting to sus out what is real, what is not; who speaks the truth, and who spews only lies fueled by ego. A beautifully structured novel, you flow through the lives of the characters and discover the dangers of losing oneself in a seemingly insignificant obssesion. I watched the movie before I read the book, and it took me out of the world every now and then. While the movie stays true to the source material, and is entertaining and surprising in its own right, you're still left wondering and contemplating at the end of the book. READ THE BOOK FIRST! "
"WOW.....this book was TOTALLY NOT like the movie.......and both happen to be great!.....The characters, Borden and Angier are basically good people that let their passion for magic basically turn them into ugly monsters.....they ended up ruining their lives by wanting to ruin each other. Jealousy and hate are ugly emotions to deal with. I think a movie that went by the book would have been just as fascinating.....I really liked the mixing of current day with past experiences.....I just wonder why they did make the movie so different?....Anyway......the ending is just plain ole creepy and much more so if you happen to listen to the audio book like I did.....Great read and very fascinating and intriguing story."
"The film adaptation of this book was one of my favourites (same title). I didn't think this book could top it. But it did. While the adaptation was masterful, this book kind of renders it as a sketch. There is some much more world building in this book. It really shows up the limitation of the moving picture.
This isn't to say where the movie diverged from the book it was was without good reason. But, it was, on the whole, a more simple story, both in terms of what wasn't covered and what was."
