For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom—but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking. Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her. Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets. But nothing comes for free, especially magic. When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. "At first I wasn't sure with the premise. The characters are looking for "providence cards" and it has a trading card feel that felt a bit cheesy at first. However, by the end I really enjoyed it! She left it on a cliffhanger and the second book isn't out yet so if you don't like having to wait, probably move this one down on your list until book 2 comes out.
Updated: I just reread this before reading book 2! Really looking forward to what comes next."
"This book is ok, not great. I did like the premise of the story… the magic system and the characters. My main issue is it all fell a little flat. The story, the characters, the plot all felt one dimensional. The romance was inauthentic and rushed and I wanted to feel the connection more than I did. I really wanted to be sucked into the world, but I wasn’t. I MAY pick up the second book to see it through, but I’m not in any rush to do so. "
"This ranks as one of my favorite adult fantasy books of all time. I absolutely loved the setting. It was a perfect mood for the beginning of winter. The main character, Elspeth, has a monster inside her mind that is a mystery the read reader gets to uncover a bit by bit. There was a perfect blend of romance, action, and magical elements that kept me reading page after page. Elspeth was brave, but human; introspective, but not annoying; and compelling, but not needy. Ravyn was mysterious and very well written. I am beyond excited to read the second book as soon as I can. I loved Gillig’s writing style. 4.5/5"
"What????? WHAT????????????? Oh my goodness, how, I have no words. This was AMAZING. This story is so full of magic and mystery and wonder and PLOT TWISTS!!!!! Elspeth Spindle, what mysterious web you weave without trying! Living in a time where magic is only allowed to be used via the Deck of Providence Cards created by a king with costly bargain who’s name is long forgotten, the town of Blunder is surrounded by mist that gives it, for a price. But, if caught with the infection from the mist, you’ll surely burn. Of course Elspeth has a deep dark secret, and meeting a highway man who’s not so low key, is the catalyst to not only her Nightmare coming true, but the key to not only her salvation, but of course the kingdom as a whole.
First I LOVE the poetic bits throughout the book, second I absolutely found the magic system so intriguing, I have no other words for it. It’s ingenious and really creative and I haven’t encountered other stories with something like this. The character development between Elspeth, and Raven is, chef’s kiss. Who knew Ione had it in her, it really is the quiet ones!
Go in blind, you won’t regret it! Happy reading! "
"4.5 ⭐️ This book pulls you into a unique magic system that had me captivated. The dark gothic vibes juxtaposed with the poetic beautifully written words were mesmerizing. An infection sweeping the land causing any who catch it to have magical abilities and a king who wants this magic stopped leaves our FMC, Elspeth hiding her true self. A monster lurks in her and she joins forces with the Captain of the Destriers who is desperate to save his brother from the infection. Leaves you hanging off a cliff and I can’t wait to dive into book two! "

5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow, that was so good I'm starting the next book immediately something I almost never do!
At first I thought this was an easy, and transparent read with some nice rhymes and a little dark tension. And this is that but also more, and I'm hooked. Onto book 2. "
