"A great sci-fi novel set in a future where human can travel to worlds without moving, that source for this miracle is on one planet. Though the state of galactic affairs are not as one would hope them to be, as the Houses of the Landsraad work for the prestige from the Padishah Emperor. Worth reading as the planet Arrakis has a prophecy of someone would appear on their planet that would help light a fire of freedom!"
"I can normally read anything and I could not get through 100 pages of this. I tried in high school and I tried again as an adult. Too many characters, too many details, timelines, etc. It felt like you were just dropped into a story that someone had been telling and you had no idea what was going on. I rarely give up on books but I just could not with this one."
"I finally finished this one after months of reading it. It ended up not being my favorite. Its not bad or anything I just didnt like it as much as other books I’ve read. I think it was mostly because I couldn’t figure out what the book was about. Was it about making Dune a better place to live? Defeating the harkkonens? The freemen legends? I wasn’t sure but by the end you realize it was none of those which makes it just as confusing. I wish it went into more of the freemen legends. I think I just wish it was about one of the things listed above instead of whatever ended up happening. There was also a weird time skip more than halfway through the book and then it was just moving really fast. "
"No one can deny this is a classic, I would easily say a masterpiece. Still the book is so rich in detail and history that it sacrifices progression. Dune even includes an index which I feel fully describes the hardships of trying to understand this story. Honestly watching the movie helped me to get thru this and I, on any other day, would think that idea sacrilege.

But rest assured there is always Google as a backup. Being a classic of course there is much symbolism to be had here. Which 99% goes over my head but researching afterwards helped. The politics ruled the show in this plot and was very rich and intricate.

The Desert culture was highly interesting as well. Rugged and self sufficient yet stuck in their ways. Spice being the center of the story that the politics circled around. Honestly it seems like all the powers and foresight was a fever dream from the spice. Maybe even the story itself. Spice seemed to be a drug the universe was hooked on. Who knows what really happened here.

I will say perhaps half of this book is understandable the other half is a feeling that you hope you got right. I'm not sure if I care to continue. The story is interesting and has me hooked but it is a chore to get through. Many pages will be boring and full of dialog then something enjoyable will strike out of nowhere. We shall see if I have the brain capacity to get thru book 2.

Quotes:

How much is actually prediction of the "wave form" and how much is the prophet shaping the future to fit the prophecy?"
