Anthony Horowitz
Death, deception, and a detective with quite a lot to hide stalk the pages of Anthony Horowitz’s brilliant murder mystery, the second in the bestselling series starring Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne.“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late . . . “These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine—a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise.Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?Baffled, the police are forced to bring in Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, the author Anthony, who’s really getting rather good at this murder investigation business. But as Hawthorne takes on the case with characteristic relish, it becomes clear that he, too, has secrets to hide. As our reluctant narrator becomes ever more embroiled in the case, he realizes that these secrets must be exposed—even at the risk of death . . .

"Another excellent Anthony Horowitz starting himself as a main character. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series. "

"Love this series by Anthony Horowitz. Book author and screenwriter Horowitz re-creates himself as an alter-ego working alongside a former homicide detective named Hawthorne. Horowitz is real, author of many TV mysteries (e.g., Foyle’s War, Magpie Murders, Alex Rider). In this fictional world, he agrees to write the biography of Hawthorne, displaying Hawthorne’s crime-solving prowess, and together they work as “partners in crime.” This is the second book I’ve read with Horowitz and Hawthorne and the interplay between them is terrific. This book is propelled by Rory Kinnear’s excellent narration, each character distinctive. If you pick up this book, read all the way through the appendix. "

"Solid series so far"

"This one was not as good as The Word Is Murder. So many of the clues and evidence that Hawthorne uses to solve the case come completely out of left field. A lot of them are so far fetched that they are really just basic assumptions that would never be used as evidence. "

"Another fantastic Anthony Horowitz book! I really enjoyed the second installment of this super meta series; I constantly had to remind myself that it’s actually still fiction. The story was just as compelling as the first novel, and I didn’t even bother trying to figure it out since it was an expertly timed and tricky mystery. I will definitely continue this series, since it seems there will be a third!!"
