Emma Lord
One of Cosmo's Best YA Novels of All TimeA fresh, irresistible rom-com from debut author Emma Lord about the chances we take, the paths life can lead us on, and how love can be found in the opposite place you expected.Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming — mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account. Enter Jack, class clown and constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time. All’s fair in love and cheese — that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life — on an anonymous chat app Jack built. As their relationship deepens and their online shenanigans escalate — people on the internet are shipping them?? — their battle gets more and more personal, until even these two rivals can’t ignore they were destined for the most unexpected, awkward, all-the-feels romance that neither of them expected."A witty rom-com reinvention ... with deeply relatable insights on family pressure and growing up.” - Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka, authors of Always Never Yours and If I’m Being Honest “An adorable debut that updates a classic romantic trope with a buzzy twist." - Jenn Bennett, author of Alex, Approximately and Serious Moonlight

"I read this all in one sitting since I enjoyed it this much!

The biggest part of this that I enjoyed was the friendship between Jack and Pepper. They were such great friends and the evolution to them crushing each other was well done!

I also liked the portrayal of contemporary life. The Twitter posts were pretty realistic but the major selling point was the atmosphere. Having the narrators being the kids and in a youthful voice helped sell the “high school romance” a bit more.

The main characters were very well created but I felt like the rest of the cast were either half-finished, or stereotyped. Poor Ethan was stereotyped for almost the entire book except for the Epilogue. This was definitely focused on Jack and Pepper and their drama only.

A great trendy feeling read!

===
Spoilers Below.

I have to say, this was a strange romance. Most of this was centered around Pepper’s and Jack’s drama and the rest was just them flirting with each other.

We only got one kiss on page, which is pretty disappointing. I love reading fluffy fanfic about my favorite ships and the kisses are one of my favorite parts. I’m kind of disappointed.

Also I’m assuming that Jack and Pepper are dating, but who knows? They never talked about it in the book. It’s very heavily implied that they will date but it doesn’t do anything about those implications. I mean... come on. If you’re gonna write a romance please include an asking out scene.

End of Spoilers!
==="
"This is a very cute YA romance! I really enjoyed how the plot unfurled, and the characters and their interactions made me smile all the time. Pepper and Jack are very believable teens with their hopes and fears, and I can't imagine anyone fitting better together than them. Just one thing - there was too much pain and hurt for such a supposedly light read. Or maybe it's because I dealt a lot with the same issues as them growing up, and it hurts twice as much when I read about it. Anyway, lovely read!"
"I like this book; it is not only super cute but I really admire the leads in that Pepper is also just relatable. Also, despite my concern over social media playing a large role, I enjoyed it because it really added to the plot. From the humor to the vulnerability, this story is so worth reading especially when there is a character named Grandma Belly. "

"I read this book in a day. The writing style is easy to read and enjoyable. However, I figured out everything that is going to happen before it happened, which is kind of expected when they tell you that the plot is a rivals to lovers plot. Overall I think that this book is a wholesome and enjoyable read. But, I would recommend this to ages 16 and up as there is a decent amount of language, including some f bombs."
