"I was really excited for this and overall left satisfied (but slightly underwhelmed). To clarify, it's a good movie. The cast is expectedly fantastic, the setting and plot is really cool. I had a fun time. But the commercials give away a fun twist that is revealed during the first half of the movie. My boyfriend went into it with zero knowledge and left way more impressed than I did because it caught him entirely off guard. I highly recommend watching this if you love a good action-packed thriller, a good cast, a movie with deep themes of relationships, control, sexism, and dependency. BUT I also recommend NOT doing too much research into this before showing up to see it, or it will take some wind out of your sails. Trust. If you like the cast, the general vibe, you'll have a good time. "
"SO GOOD! The comedy landed, the storyline was exciting, and the acting was superb. I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. I do hate that I knew what the plot was kind of about because of the advertising. This movie could have had an awesome twist had the advertising not given it away. Besides that, the movie as a whole is a fun ride! Definitely see it when you have the chance. "
"Sophie Thatcher is great in Companion, and so is Jack Quaid. I haven't seen either of them in all that much, but I'll think I'll have to follow both of their careers a little more. The highlight for me though was seeing both Harvey Guillén and Lukas Gage. I was honestly hoping for a little more with Gage's character arc, but he does get to do some pretty fun stuff."
"The first half of the movie is five stars, the second half.. has issues, mainly with Guillén and Gage’s characters. Also, the main character literally tells you what’s going to happen at the beginning of the movie, but the movie still tries to draw out what might happen like you don’t already know. "
""Companion" is a fun horror comedy!!! I laughed a lot the whole film!!! I will admit it was not completely what I was expecting overall, but the plot was engaging and unique. If you enjoy dark humor, then those movies will definitely resonate with you. If you're not a fan of sci-fi and/or dark humor, then you will not enjoy this movie very much. I loved the way the director addressed AI elements throughout the film and poked fun at the real-world societal views of AI in a playful and creative way. Overall, this was a fun watch for me! It reminded me of "Your Monster," but with a sci-fi setting instead. I suggest giving it a watch if you enjoyed "Your Monster" and enjoy AI themed movies!"
"Companion (2025) is a darkly comedic sci-fi thriller that delves into themes of control, entitlement, and the complexities of artificial intelligence in human relationships. Directed by Drew Hancock in his feature debut, the film offers a satirical look at modern companionship through a blend of suspense, humor, and social commentary.
The narrative centers on Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) as they embark on a weekend retreat with friends at a secluded estate owned by the enigmatic billionaire Sergey (Rupert Friend). What begins as a typical getaway soon unravels into chaos, especially after a startling revelation about Iris's true nature. The film cleverly critiques overcontrolling behaviors and the commodification of relationships, all set against a backdrop of technological advancements.
Sophie Thatcher delivers a standout performance as Iris, capturing the nuances of a character grappling with emerging sentience and autonomy. Jack Quaid portrays Josh with a blend of charm and underlying menace, embodying a character who believes he's the hero of his own story. The supporting cast, including Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend, contribute depth and diversity to the ensemble, each adding layers to the unfolding drama.
Companion is a thought-provoking and entertaining film that challenges viewers to reflect on the nature of relationships in an increasingly digital age. Its combination of sharp performances, especially by Sophie Thatcher, and a compelling narrative makes it a noteworthy addition to the sci-fi thriller genre.
