"101 Dalmatians (1996) offers a mixed viewing experience. While lacking major flaws, the film also lacks any moments that really shine and make it memorable. Glen Close shines as Cruella DeVil, but the overall narrative fails to leave a lasting impression.
The central characters, Roger (Jeff Daniels) and Anita (Joely Richardson), feel rushed, hindering any emotional depth. Nanny (Joan Plowright) add warmth but is underutilized. Jasper and Horace, played by Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) and Mark Williams, contribute some comedic moments through their shenanigans as Cruella’s henchmen, however much of their humor is very in line with John Hughes’ style of slapstick, which doesn’t appeal to me, but may to a younger audience. These characters also lack development throughout the film.
The Dalmatians charm with adorable antics, yet the film lacks any real weight and struggles to establish a genuine threat. The climax, while heartwarming, feels contrived. Skinner, the taxidermist played by John Shrapnel, adds depth with his villainy, but Cruella steals the spotlight.
Overall, 101 Dalmatians (1996) is a pretty forgettable romp. While moments of charm and Glen Close’s performance as Cruella do stand out, you might just be better served watching the original animated version of the same title for a more timeless and engaging experience.
