"I wasn’t going to watch this because I knew it would be sad, and I don’t consider Jamie Foxx a particularly good actor but in this he was. Three things stood out to me. The first was that the LA Times writer was exploitative and understood nothing about mental illness and ignored everyone who tried to tell him, mostly black folks. He wanted to force his idea of what things should be like onto someone for whom the world is a very very different place. The Times writer may have Gained more patience and understanding over time but his character was largely racist, ableist and classist. Second, The brutal treatment of homeless folks by LAPD & society at large’s othering and ignoring these people may not have been the focus of the film but it certainly was ever-present in the background. And third, the main character of course. He was compassionate, in love with music and had so much light inside himself fighting darkness that may have been genetic, may have been triggered by trauma, we don’t get to learn much about his past. The movie focused on the LA Times writer’s is experience, not on the savant Ayers. I still think the times writer was exploiting Ayers, I never read any of his articles but the movies certainly portrayed him more than it did Ayers which I don’t think is right. I do appreciate that the movie did not demonize Ayers and instead showed an extremely gifted man trying to navigate the world as safely as possible and tragically felt remorse for spiraling when it was obviously out of his control. One can’t help but wonder if life had presented a more stable environment, or a compassionate therapist that understood schizophrenia instead of forcibly hospitalizing, if Ayers could have had more peace in his life. I hope he was able to keep the family connection he re-established at the end of the film."
