The elderly Shukishi and his wife, Tomi, take the long journey from their small seaside village to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Their elder son, Koichi, a doctor, and their daughter, Shige, a hairdresser, don't have much time to spend with their aged parents, and so it falls to Noriko, the widow of their younger son who was killed in the war, to keep her in-laws company.

"I have been enjoying films by Yasijiro Oju recently. The cinematography is very similar. The themes explore daily struggles of Japanese families in the 1950’s. This one is without the humour of other films and slower in developing the story and perhaps more forced. I found it tedious in its slow development of relationships and its judgement of the familial bonds. Perhaps that’s just a reflection on me 70 years later."

"A slow moving, but touching, realistic portrayal of generational tension in a post WWII Japanese family. Some kids take their parents for granted. Their selfishness hurts the parents and makes them feel they should have raised their kids better. "
