"🙌 I did NOT expect to like this, but I was glued to the TV, as this version totally took me by surprise with its unique spin on an already beautiful tale. I mean, I thought the original movie was perfect…. but this was equally formidable in its own way.
If you enjoyed the original movie, do yourself a favor and give this remake a look 👀 👍🏾👍🏾"
"I still have tears in my eyes as I’m writing this. It is unbelievably tragic how under-appreciated this film is. I was blown away by the Celie’s story and how, despite the seemingly never-ending suffering she faced, she was a force of kindness and faith. The story is filled with so much resiliency, hope, sisterhood and the love for God. It made me proud to be a Christian. The music was gorgeous and every actor was right on the money, acting and singing wise. The standouts for me were definitely Danielle Brooks (she WORKED for her Oscar nomination), Taraji P. Henson (you could tell she was having fun in the role), and OF COURSE, Fantasia Barrino (my God, her performance moved me). One of my favorite aspects of this film though would have to have been the choreography. It was so dynamic and fun. Just an incredibly adapted musical. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I will now resume bawling my eyes out over Celie and Nettie’s reunion while humming “I’m Here.”"
"They had to take a classic movie that was an amazing movie and make it into a musical. What a disgrace. They should’ve left original and never made it into a musical. It’s the same storyline. It just has music in it which really really sucks."

"I really enjoyed this musical remake. It was beautifully filmed and lighted. This movie was loaded with a talented cast. I loved the small changes and loved that the most iconic lines were kept. I was happy to see Whoopi make a quick appearance. The best thing to me was how long the movie followed the characters after the dinner table scene. It was good to see the details of how their lives balanced out. I give this movie an A+. The original is still my favorite, but this one is now on my favorite movies' list."
"Fantasia killed it, as expected. This movie introduced me to the beautiful soul that is Danielle Brooks; definitely following her career now. There were some moments from the OG film I was hoping would be in here. Also, as much as I LOVE Taraji, I feel like her lip syncing could have been better; the audio sounded like someone singing with their whole body/heart, and Taraji’s mouth was barely moving at moments."
"Saw this in the theater today, just really good!"

"Amazing movie! Based on the stage production which was based on the 1985 film which was based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. I honestly wasn’t expecting to like this film 1) bc I loved the original so much and 2) I didn’t think I’d enjoy watching a musical film. However, the musical numbers were fabulous! This remake surpassed the original film. The performers had some tough shoes to fill but they all did an amazing job! Fantasia Barrino took over the Celie role from Whoopi & was incredible. Taraji Henson took over the Shug role from Margaret Avery & was fabulous. Danielle Brooks took over the Sofia role from Oprah & was absolutely wonderful! (As much as I enjoyed Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s performance in The Holdovers, I think she’s gonna get some stiff competition from Ms. Brooks at The Oscars.) Taking over the Danny Glover role is Colman Domingo as Mister. He could’ve just as easily earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars for this as Best Actor for Rustin. Rounding out the cast is Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier, Jon Batiste, H.E.R. and Corey Hawkins. Lots of talented artists here! I always enjoy watching movies filmed in Georgia. The cinematography was beautiful. The set & costume designs were marvelous as well. This movie did an effective job of incorporating elements of fantasy, drama and humor plus the fantastic musical numbers. It also drives home the fact that life can have terrible consequences but redemption is possible too."
