"4.5⭐️ Rewatch. RIPLEY!! Ughhh .. one of my all-time favorite characters and top 2 girl crushes! It always strikes me though that this character was written by men originally to be male..... hmmm don’t know what that says about me but it does say a lot about women in film prior to these movies and how probably a lot of us were dying for more than simpering damsels in distress or objectified male fantasies. Here’s what Sigourney Weaver had to say about it after receiving the Golden Lion award, the highest honor at the Venice Film Festival, just today (8.28.24): “You know what I appreciated about what Walter Hill and David Giler wrote and how Ridley Scott put it together was that my character in Alien was a person not a woman. There are very few writers who can write a script and it’s just a person. You don't see her having to be girly or womanly – look, it's great and women can be everything – but I got to play an 'everyperson' part. She is all of us. She is what you become when you have to find the ingenuity and don't even have the time to be brave or anything else. Why do I play strong women? I just play women and women are strong - and do you know why because we don't give up, because we don't get to. We do it.” Ok more than a left turn than I intended so here’s my review: ALIENS IS GREAT and Ripley is forever an “everywoman” badass! "
