JR is a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie, is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy’s determined mother struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father — JR begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams, with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.

"⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 The beginning with the little boy was so good but the switch to the older character was so abrupt that I felt like I was watching a different film and I wasn’t invested at all in the mooning over the girl plot point at that part. Too bad it didn’t just continue on with the kid. That little actor was fantastic. The soundtrack was also terrific. "

"As I advance in age, and with the state of the world, I no longer enjoy watching things that are stressful and anxious. No more horror, no thrillers. I want to be entertained with joy, happiness and laughter. This movie hit me in all my feels, in the best way. So good on every level. Between this and The Midnight Sky, Clooney is becoming one of my favorite directors. I hope he keeps it up. "

"Good movie because it is based on the real life of the author. Always intriguing to see a “rags to riches” story. So interesting to see how despite a less than perfect upbringing a person can become high achieving (graduated from Yale) and highly successful (writing best selling books, having Clooney produce that book into a highly acclaimed movies and is now writing for Prince Harry - his memoirs). Really like that the ending was not a big sappy montage of the author’s accomplishments. "

"A very touching and funny story, of a family we’re the uncle takes his nephew under his wing. He navigates his nephew through all life’s lessons in the most loving, funny way that will touch your heart. Ben affleck was outstanding a must see. "

"Soundtrack was better than the movie. Although I didn’t hate it it just left me wanting a bit more closure at the end."

"Three stars. Heartwarming and engaging story about a working-class lad driven to academic success by his single mother, and guided to manhood by the bar-room wisdom of Uncle Charlie and crew. He confronts classism, isolation, and his absentee father. Great acting, some great scenes peppered throughout, but the story fell flat; the ending was abrupt and anticlimactic. "
