"Mission: Impossible 2 feels like the epitome of an American blockbuster from the perspective of someone who isn’t American. It has all the stereotypical tropes of American blockbusters and cranks them up to 11—female characters written in a way designed to fulfill male fantasies, cheesy and sincere dialogue, slow-mo out the wazzoo, long takes of hot people staring into the camera.
I’ve spent a decent amount of time getting to know Brazilians that moved to America. When talking to them about what they consider to be the greatest American movies, they unanimously and unironically agree; the Fast and Furious franchise.
I was shocked. Befuddled. Perplexed.
As I came to understand, they view the Fast and Furious films the same way many Americans felt about Top Gun: Maverick. They felt that Fast and Furious captured the American ethos and aesthetic in a way that no other franchise does.
I feel like Mission: Impossible II is similar to Fast and Furious in that sense. As an American, I disliked almost all of it. I was constantly rolling my eyes. But I was also giggling at the absurdity of it all. I can see how people from other countries might really appreciate this movie.
The choreography is rough, the 2000s aesthetic did not age well, and I cringed so many times. But despite all of that, it’s impressive and endearing how hard it commits to the bit. Tom Cruise is epic (and hot). There are a few badass action sequences."
"2/10 Utterly hilarious garbage. I laughed so hard I cried. It was so over the top and the tonal shift compared to the first tom cruise movie gave me severe whiplash. Who approved this? No one should have made money from this. This is the ugly, dysfunctional marriage between gratuitous explosions and objectification of women. The script is abysmal, effects are awful, cinematography was as uninspired as it gets, and acting wasn’t even worth hallmark quality. If you want to hate watch a “dad-hallmark movie” this is prime real estate."
"Easily the weakest in the franchise, this suffers from too much slow motion and a need to Imitate Bond to a point. However, it still features a decent antagonist, a fair amount of good jokes and solid action."
