"Something I appreciate about early 90s action movies is the fact that they didn’t have the option for special vfx and crazy, disorienting editing — which is used to cover up weak storytelling and trick the viewer into thinking what they’re watching is fast-paced — like some modern action flicks. Sure, there are some moments of special effects near the end, but for the most part this spy story succeeds due to the practicality of how it’s presented. De Palma quickly tells the viewer all they need to know: bad guy stealing important data, skilled crew, Tom Cruise, and cool (even for 2023) gadgets. Then he throws us into a fast-paced heist mission and lets us catch up as we watch. I’m no Gummo, but I have a strong feeling a lot of the hacker terminology thrown around does not hold up today. But that’s not important. Quite a few of the twists really surprised me but by the end, the constant twists and surprise villains became a little tiresome. I’m only 3 films into De Palma’s filmography but I really love everything I’ve seen so far. I’m still unsure what attributes Carrie, Scarface, and Mission: Impossible have in common that resonate with me, but I’m going to keep watching more of De Palma’s films to find out. "
"8/10 Honestly I really liked this movie! It has that classic 90’s film feel which is just so comforting for some reason. I went into this movie not knowing what it was about at all (despite it being so popular) and was really surprised at the story. It was pretty predictable and some of the action was eye-roll worthy but this film does tension so well. This team knew how to make you sit on the edge of your seat. There’s actually not much dialogue in this movie when you think about it, but the actors are good enough to pull it off and still keep me interested from scene to scene. A classic that deserves its place as a pop culture icon :)"
