"Not nearly as good as the hustler"

"This is a rewatch, watching it after watching THE HUSTLER. A really solid sequel in general (even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first), and I found the ending to be quite dark, especially considering the lessons Fast Eddie Felson learns from the first film. Easily the direction by Martin Scorsese is the standout. His trademark style of incredibly dynamic camera movement and editing style (by Michael Ballhaus and Thelma Schoonmaker respectively), along with a banger soundtrack makes the movie so riveting to watch, and makes up for some issues in the third act. Equally fantastic are the performances by Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (the teacher-student dynamic between Paul Newman and Tom Cruise is a highlight). The age adds a unique texture to Paul Newman’s performance this time around, and does an effective job of adding layers of complexity to his character (I can totally see why he won for this, and it is a rare case of an overdue win that actually comes for a legitimately great performance). There’s a great cameo by Forest Whitaker here as well. Highly recommended.
There are a lot of parallels between this and TOP GUN: MAVERICK in the sense that this is a sequel released long after the original and follows one character who transitions to a teacher who becomes the mentor to a younger man. I find it hilarious that Tom Cruise was in this film too, and he essentially becomes the Paul Newman character in TOP GUN: MAVERICK."
